1. THE DISPATCH

Cherry Creek Reservoir

As if the virus weren’t enough, the middle-aged couple was informed upon arriving at the Cherry Creek Reservoir during their trip to Denver that blue-green algae was present, and swimming would not be allowed.

Trump doesn’t believe the algae exists, the husband said. I wish Trump didn’t exist, the wife replied.

Most, including children and infants, ignored the warnings and swam. Clumps floated in the water that resembled algae but did not appear blue green. Many seemed to operate under the assumption that if the danger could not be seen, it could not harm them.

They met old friends who had a small catamaran sailboat and found them at a spot by the beach where the craft could be easily shored.

The day moved slowly; they’d had a decent amount to drink the previous night and couldn’t handle their hangovers the way they once could. Out on the sailboat, the husband took notice of the tiny light reflections that pinged off the softly lapping waves. He slid to the other side as the boom shifted to catch the wind after a tack. As the boat glided forward, he eased onto one of the catamaran’s hulls and sat. The way the opposite hull sliced through the water was clean. Beyond it, he thought he would see mountains, but the reservoir was low and offered mostly views of the shore and a highway on half its side. He asked how fast the boat could go in optimal conditions. His friend said 22mph and the way he said it made it seem like he thought that was very fast.
